About the British pound and the UAE dirham
The British pound (GBP, £) is the currency of the United Kingdom, issued by the Bank of England. The pound sterling floats freely and is the oldest currency still in use.
The UAE dirham (AED) is the currency of the United Arab Emirates, issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. The dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar since 1997, so its rate against the dollar does not change.

- When paying by card abroad, choose to pay in the local currency rather than letting the machine convert it for you.
- Avoid exchanging cash at airports and hotels, where margins are usually highest.
- For large transfers, compare a few providers on the total amount received.
