About the US dollar and the UAE dirham
The US dollar (USD, $) is the currency of the United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama (alongside the balboa) and several other countries, issued by the Federal Reserve. The US dollar floats freely and is the world's main reserve currency; most other currencies are quoted against it.
The UAE dirham (AED) is the currency of the United Arab Emirates, issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. The dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar since 1997, so its rate against the dollar does not change.
Because of the peg, the USD to AED rate stays practically fixed; only the fees and margins charged by banks and exchange offices change.

- The rate shown here is the mid-market rate. Banks, card providers and exchange offices add a margin, typically 1–5%.
- When paying by card abroad, choose to pay in the local currency rather than letting the machine convert it for you.
- Avoid exchanging cash at airports and hotels, where margins are usually highest.
- For large transfers, compare a few providers on the total amount received.
