How to use the Dual Citizenship Checker
- 1Pick your current citizenship.
- 2Pick the citizenship you want to acquire.
- 3See whether both countries allow dual citizenship, and any conditions.
Both countries must allow it
Dual citizenship only works if neither country forces you to give up the other nationality. Some countries (like Japan, Singapore and Austria) generally require renunciation; others (like the US, UK, Canada and Germany since 2024) allow it.
Countries with restrictions
Of the 28 countries in our guides, 21 generally allow dual citizenship. These restrict it: Spain (limited), Netherlands (limited), Austria (not allowed), Japan (not allowed), Singapore (not allowed), Mexico (limited), United Arab Emirates (limited). Restrictions often have exceptions, for example for citizens by birth or for EU nationals, so read the full guide for each country.
Practical issues for dual citizens
- Some countries require you to enter and leave on their passport.
- You may have obligations in both countries, such as military service or tax filing (the US taxes citizens wherever they live).
- Consular help can be limited when you are in your other country of nationality.
Frequently asked questions
What if my country does not allow dual citizenship?
Acquiring another citizenship may cause you to lose your original one automatically, or you may be asked to renounce it. Check your country's rules before applying.
