About the rates
Rates are the European Central Bank's reference rates, published once per working day. Banks, cards and money-transfer services add a margin, so the rate you get will differ slightly. Use this for planning and comparing offers.
Why your bank's rate is different
The rates here are mid-market reference rates from the European Central Bank, published around 16:00 CET on working days. Banks, card providers and exchange kiosks add a margin on top, so the rate you get is usually 1–5% worse, and airport and hotel exchange desks can be worse still.
- Pay in the local currency when a card machine abroad asks; choosing your home currency (dynamic currency conversion) usually costs more.
- Check your card's foreign transaction fee, often around 3%; many travel cards charge none.
- Compare the total cost of a money transfer, including the exchange margin, not just the fee.
Frequently asked questions
How often are rates updated?
The ECB publishes reference rates every working day around 16:00 CET. We refresh them several times a day.
Are the rates updated at weekends?
No. Reference rates are published on working days only, so over a weekend the converter shows Friday's rate. Markets keep moving slightly, which is why apps sometimes show small differences.
