Where your carbon footprint comes from
For most people in rich countries, transport is one of the largest parts of their footprint: a year of driving an average petrol car (12,000 miles) is about 3.1 tonnes of CO₂e, and one long-haul return flight in economy can add 1–2 tonnes. Digital habits are much smaller: a year of typical searching, emailing and streaming is usually tens of kilograms.
| Activity | Approx. CO₂e |
|---|---|
| 1 Google search | 0.2 g |
| 1 AI chatbot prompt | 0.03–0.3 g |
| 1 hour of TV streaming | ~55 g |
| Driving 100 km (avg petrol car) | ~16 kg |
| London–New York return (economy) | ~1.4 t |
Frequently asked questions
Where do the emission factors come from?
Cars and flights use the UK Government's official greenhouse gas conversion factors (DESNZ/DEFRA), which companies use for carbon reporting. Digital figures come from published research by Google, OpenAI, the Carbon Trust and Mike Berners-Lee.
