How to use the IELTS / TOEFL / PTE Converter
- 1Choose the test you took.
- 2Enter your overall score.
- 3See the equivalent scores on the other tests and your CEFR level.
Where the equivalents come from
TOEFL equivalents follow ETS's published comparison with IELTS, PTE equivalents follow Pearson's 2025 concordance study, and Duolingo equivalents follow Duolingo's published concordance. Concordance tables are approximate, so always check the exact minimum score your university or visa requires.
Typical minimum scores
| Goal | IELTS | TOEFL iBT |
|---|---|---|
| Most undergraduate programs | 6.0–6.5 | 79–90 |
| Most master's programs | 6.5–7.0 | 90–100 |
| Top universities and competitive programs | 7.0–7.5 | 100–110 |
| Medicine, nursing and teaching | 7.0–7.5 (no band below 7) | Varies: check the regulator |
Choosing a test
- Scores are usually valid for 2 years from the test date.
- Check each band: many programs set a minimum for reading, writing, listening and speaking, not just the overall score.
- Visa rules can differ from university rules, so check the visa authority's list of accepted tests before you book.
- Duolingo is cheap and fast and widely accepted by US universities, but not every university or visa authority accepts it.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS 6.5 the same as TOEFL 90?
Approximately. ETS maps IELTS 6.5 to a TOEFL iBT range of 79–93, so a TOEFL score around 90 is usually accepted where IELTS 6.5 is required.
Which test is accepted for visas?
It depends on the country. The UK requires specific Secure English Language Tests (such as IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI); Australia accepts several tests including PTE and TOEFL; always check the official visa page.
