BMI categories for adults
Underweight: below 18.5. Healthy weight: 18.5 to 24.9. Overweight: 25 to 29.9. Obesity: 30 or higher. These are the standard WHO and CDC ranges for adults aged 20 and over.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may score as overweight, and it does not account for age, sex or ethnicity. Talk to a healthcare provider for a full assessment.
