How Canadian paycheques are calculated

Your employer deducts federal income tax, provincial income tax, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions and Employment Insurance (EI) premiums from every paycheque. Quebec workers pay the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) and Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) instead of CPP, with a lower EI rate.

Income tax is charged in brackets: only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. The basic personal amounts (federal $16,452 in 2026, plus a provincial amount) make the first part of your income tax-free.

Frequently asked questions

Which province has the lowest taxes?

For most middle incomes, Alberta, British Columbia and the territories leave the most take-home pay, while Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador leave the least. Compare provinces in the calculator.

Are RRSP contributions tax-deductible?

Yes. RRSP contributions reduce your taxable income (but not CPP or EI), so they lower the income tax on your paycheque. Enter them in the RRSP field.
